Julius and Chica

Julius (peeking from behind the tree) is Pet Haven's most recent intake. He arrived less than a week ago, along with Copper (a golden retriever mix) from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. We have a ten day hold on all of our new dogs before we place them up for adoption (we want to make sure they are in good health!). Well ... Copper tagged along to the adoption event this past Saturday and was a big hit. He's already got someone interested in him. Julius ALSO was a big hit and a vet tech from one of Pet Haven's veterinary partners has fallen head over heels in love with this boy. Julius is about a year and a half years old and was rescued by Karen of Red Lake ... he was covered with scars and scabs from old injuries and 200+ wood ticks! Everyone who has had the chance to meet him falls in love with his kind, gentle, wise spirit. He was given the nickname of "son of Ahnung" at the vet clinic. In October, 2008 I had the good fortune of making my first trip up to Red Lake and met and fell in love with Ahnung [Ahnung is now a therapy dog working with at-risk youth and in hospice ... she shares her story on her first blog entry. Click here to read it and watch her video]. Julius has the same markings of Ahnung (pronounced ah-NUNG and means star in ojibway) .... and also has the same temperament .... who knows if Julius is truly Ahnung's son, but if he is I can personally vouch for the incredible spirit he inherited from his possible mama :)

Then there is sweet Chica (on right) a 3-4 year old German shepherd mix who came to us from another one of our shelter partners, People for Pets in Spencer, Iowa. Chica was spending the day with Julius' temporary foster at Rescue Buddy Boarding. Chica was previously being fostered at Pampered Pooch Playground where the staff there fell in love with sweet boy. One day he was playing greeter and welcoming all the dogs coming in from daycare.

I had the chance to spend a few hours one afternoon with Julius and Chica and took a bunch of photos which I have put into a video.

There's a pretty good chance that Julius already has an adoptive home ... but Chica is still patiently waiting, so help us get the word out about Chica. And if your heart is captured by Julius let us know ... there are probably other Julius' running around up north waiting to be rescued. Email us at dogs@pethavenmn.org.

Adoption Event Recap

Thanks to everyone (fosters, volunteers, potential adopters) who came out to the adoption event on Saturday...It was a great day!! Despite it being a gorgeous holiday weekend, we had lots of traffic at the Richfield Petco for several adoption day debuts. We still have several wonderful dogs waiting to find homes...

Russell, the 9 year odl lhasa apso mix continues to wait patiently for his forever home. Lots of thanks to his foster, Sandy, for waiting ever so patiently along with him....we know that forever family is out here...is it you??
Beau, the handsome coonhound, also made an appearance despite an upset tummy.

And Scout is still searching for his forever home....

Hola Chica!!

Three-year old Chica is one of the newest additions to the Pet Haven family, she arrived on Laura's May 20th transport from People 4 Pets in Iowa. She's a beautiful black & grey German Shepherd/Husky mix. Don't let the salt & pepper coloring fool you...she's clearly a young girl and that's just her natural hair color!

Can we just talk about how sweet this girl is for a minute? I guarantee she'll melt your heart just as quickly as she did to us at Pet Haven and Pampered Pooch, where is she boarding. She's gentle and playful, just a curious little girl.
Chica was found on the streets of Iowa with her hubby, Bob, a two year old black lab that was also taken into Pet Haven last week. Not surprisingly, Chica is wonderful with dogs of all sizes and type. She's got a calm demeanor but don't be fooled, she loves to play just as much! Check out this video we received from our friends at Pampered Pooch.

For more info and pics, check out Chica's Petfinder bio. If you'd like to meet Chica or any of our adoptable dogs, stop by Richfield Petco on Saturday 5/29 from 10 - Noon.

Your dog is so cute! Can I pet it?

We've all heard this before, right? Well hopefully this is how most folks approach you and your pooch while on a walk. Asking the owner for permission to pet their dog is the first step in establishing a good relationship with a strange dog and owner. This allows the owner to decide whether or not this is a safe situation for everyone and provide instructions on how you, a stranger, should approach their dog, if at all. This is true for both kids and adults.

The following cartoon was created by Lili Chin at http://doggiedrawings.net/ and provides some great tips on how to safely introduce yourself to a new pup!

Adoptable Dog Update: Susie, the Puppy Mill Rescue

A few months back, Pet Haven took in two Puppy Mill rescues from the Animal Humane Society.

Their foster mom has been working hard with both Susie and Daisy to help them overcome their fears and anxiety as a result of living in a wire crate for their 6-8 years of life before being rescued by AHS and Pet Haven.

Susie, the 8-year old black & silver Poodle, is still shy and timid, but with a lot of love and special attention, we know she will continue her progress when given the extra security, love and comfort of a forever home. Susie will make the perfect lap dog and would love a home with another dog, as she has bonded quite well with her foster sister Daisy.

If you have some extra love in your heart, will you consider bringing Susie into your home?

Please email dogs@pethavenmn.org to learn more about Susie and our other adoptable dogs and cats!
