Adoption event tomorrow: Saturday, May 30th

A select number of dogs will be meeting and greeting their adoring fans at the Richfield Petco tomorrow, Saturday, May 30th, from 10am to noon. This is an extra adoption event due to the fact that May has 5 Saturdays so a smaller number of dogs will be in attendance. Confirmed attendees:

Winston - 3 year old, male, Spring Spaniel
Savannah - 1 year old, female, Black Lab Mix
Charlie - 9 month old, male, Cavalier/Cocker Spaniel Mix
Abbie - 1 year old, female, Black Lab Mix
Zoey - 3 year old, female, Black Lab Mix
Harold - 6 year old, male, Black Lab Mix
Abbey - 10 year old, female, West Highland Terrier
Sadie - 9 year old, female, Irish Setter (pictured above)
Chuck - 10 year old, male, Poodle/Maltese Mix

Other dogs may be in attendance. We would love to talk to you about any of the dogs in our foster care program.

We hope to see you there!

Foster homes needed!

Availability of foster homes is one of the greatest limiting factors when it comes to determining how many dogs (and cats) we can rescue. The number of animals in need always far out strips the number of foster homes available. We are always looking for new foster homes.

Summer is a great time to try out fostering. We've past the major muddy paws spring season (finally and thank goodness!) and taking an evening walk is fun (instead of the freezing cold chore that it can be in the winter).

We have all kinds of dogs waiting for foster homes right now:

Pepper is a 1 - 2 year old male lab/collie mix who is currently boarded at one of our doggy daycare partners. He is good with dogs, cats and kids. He knows basic commands and appears to be housebroken.

Harold is a 6-8 year old lab mix. Harold has been hanging out at one of our veterinary partners and has made an appearance at one of our adoption events. He was a bit growly with other dogs, but this may well be just a stress reaction to new situations. We would love to get him into a foster home where he can have a few days to settle in and show his true colors. Harold is on the smaller side for a lab mix.

Enya is a middle aged sheltie mix. She does well with other dogs, but does not like cats. She is housetrained. She should be an easy keeper for almost any foster home. She was surrendered by a family because their 2 year old developed allergies. She is good with kids!

Jester is a 2 year old retriever mix. He has a longer coat than a lab - maybe a flat coat or golden retriever mix. He is very good with other dogs. Not known how he is with cats and kids, but he's a very friendly boy!

Koda (sorry, no photo, but he's cute!) is a 3 year old male lab/dalmatian mix who is currently fostered by one of our doggy daycare partners. He is a good boy who would love to be your summer walking partner. He has done well with the other dogs at his boarding facility.

These two girls are young Australian Cattle Dog littermates that are looking for a new home. They are very friendly with other dogs. They do not need to be fostered together.

We also have a few other dogs looking for foster homes that we don't get have pictures or much information for:

We are taking in two dogs from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue this weekend. We don't have any information on what type of dogs we are getting from them. We will take dogs who would benefit the most from getting into a foster home or who need additional medical attention. Dogs from Red Lake have special spirits and it is nearly impossible not to fall in love with them, regardless of their breed.

We also are looking at taking in a beagle and a shepherd mix if anyone out there has a special affinity for these breeds.

If any of these dogs sound like they might fit into your household and you are interested in potentially fostering them, please email pethavendogs@yahoo.com

Meet Lilah!

Lilah is an 18 month old Blue Tick Beagle. She is an active girl and true to her beagle nature she loves to explore outside, but she also loves to snuggle up with her favorite people. She is also one of those dogs who loves to really burrow in to a pile of blankets for a good snooze.

Lilah loves kids and does well with other dogs. She's curious with cats, but not aggressive and all indications are that she could easily live with a cat in her forever home once she gets a chance to do a thoroughly inspect them.

She is used to being crated when left alone. She is mostly housetrained, but still doesn't give any signals that she needs to go out so there's a little work left to do.

Lilah would make a great family dog. Maybe that family is yours?

Abbie and Jester

Abbie and Jester came in to Pet Haven this weekend from a small shelter in rural Iowa.

Abbie was surrendered to the shelter because she would not hunt. She's 15 months old and a small lab mix at about 40lbs. She is smart and sweet, the shelter volunteers just loved her. She kept her kennel clean at the shelter so they think she is probably housetrained. She's shy at first, but loves attention once she warms up to you. She is good with other dogs. Abby has gone to a foster home.

Jester is a sweet retriever mix. He has longer black hair. He's estimated to be 2 years old and weighs in at 58 lbs. He's working hard on housetraining and doing very well. The shelter reports that he loves attention and he loves other dogs. He was checked by our vet this weekend and was given a good bill of health other than a little ear infection. He's hanging out at one of our doggy daycare partners while he waits for a foster home. He's a young boy who is still impressionable and I am sure he will flourish in a loving foster home. Maybe that home is yours?

Adopted Dog Monday!

We have some wonderful adoptions to celebrate this week!

Maggie, an older black lab, went to her new home this week. Her new home has a mom and daughter, three cats and a big fenced yard. Maggie will be in heaven! Congratulations, Maggie!

Daisy, a black lab, has been in foster care for many months waiting for the right home to find her. She has some trust issues and need an adoptive home where she could feel safe and who would move slowly with her when necessary. Daisy met her new dad at the dog park and worked her charms. His last dog was also picky with her friends, so he is familiar with the challenges he may face with Daisy. Congratulations, Daisy!

They call it puppy love...

Too cute not to share...Savannah (black lab) and Winston (springer spaniel) are fostered together by Laura L. They love each other and were caught snuggling at the end of our adoption event on Saturday.

Both of these furkids are good with other dogs and would do best in a home where they are not left for 8+ hours a day. Savannah is great with cats!

Pepper and Zoey: Fosters needed!

Pepper (top) and Zoey (bottom) are two black lab mixes who are getting a 2nd chance at a happy ending with Pet Haven. They are currently at an animal control facility in Iowa where the adoption rates for black dogs are abysmally low. They will be transported to Minneapolis this weekend are looking for foster homes.

Pepper is a 1 year old, male lab/border collie mix. It's not often that we know how a dog will do with cats before arriving in foster care, but Pepper is one of the exceptions -- we know he is great with cats! He is also reportedly good with other dogs and kids. He knows his basic commands already and has started working on his housetraining. What a catch!

Zoey is a 5 year old, female lab mix. She's a bit shy at first, but once she gets to know you she is very affectionate. She is good with other dogs and kids. Her favorite past times include snuggling and riding in the car. She's old enough to be past the crazy puppy stages and young enough to be up for anything you want to do.

If you have room in your heart and your home to take one of these dogs in as a foster, please email pethavendogs@yahoo.com.

Cheerleaders

Trixie, a Yorkie Pet Haven alum, and Katie, a pointer mix who is available for adoption, are heading up a cheerleading squad for Pet Haven's Fast and the Furballs team running the 5K Fundraiser this weekend.

They are going to raise money to support the team and put together some cute signs and maybe some cute outfits to show off along the race route on Saturday.

Like Katie and Trixie, even if you are not a runner you can still support our fundraising efforts. Please check out our Fast and the Furballs blog and our First Giving page to help!

Adopted Dog Monday!

We are happy to have several adoptions to report again this week!

Hawkeye (no photo), a yellow lab, was adopted last week by a wonderful family. He's already attended his first obedience class with his new mom.

Kolby (no photo), a black lab, was adopted at our event this weekend. Yay for another big black dog finding a loving home!

Montana, a St. Bernard mix, went home with his new family this weekend. He has a couple of kids to keep him busy in his new home. We are also happy to report, if you read his first blog entry, that his stiffness has cleared up, all tests were good and he is a healthy boy!

Baxter, a maltese, was adopted this past week. Baxter was surrendered to Pet Haven because his previous owners were planning to euthanize him for peeing in the house. His foster home never had any problems with him and his new home is prepared to be patient through any setbacks as well. What a lucky guy.

Banjo, a beagle, found a new family who loves him and can meet his needs after many months in foster care. Banjo has come a long way in his time with Pet Haven and we hope he will continue to blossom in his new home.

Garage Sale - Donations Needed

One of our wonderful volunteers is holding a garage sale and donating all proceeds to Pet Haven. Becky is looking for donated goods to include in the sale. Please email her if you have anything to contribute: rebeccasheldon@yahoo.com

Here are some ideas from Becky:

I am looking for good saleable items: small furniture, yard and garden items, kitchen items, kids clothes and shoes in good condition and a few adult clothes in really good condition. Paper back books and games sell quite well but stuffed toys do not. A good test is to think, would I buy this at a garage sale? and if the answer is yes! donate it! Last year I sold hostas and lilies that I had dug from my yard. If you have any excess plants donate them too as they went very well last year.

Mark your calendars for the sale as well!
May 29th and 30th

Adopted Dog Update: Foster

Here's an update from Foster's new family. He was adopted on May 2nd:

Well, we've made it over a week! I think that Foster is adjusting quite nicely. He and Lynette usually go for long morning walks and watch the sunrise together while I get ready for work (Monday-Friday). When I get home he and I play in our back yard or go for walks while Lynette makes dinner. Foster knows what a frisbee is and we play catch together. He likes to run around the back yard and even lay down on the deck. He also loves to chase squirrels up trees. He is very intelligent. He knows: go get your toy, go upstairs, go downstairs, go outside, go inside, lay down, sit down, get your frisbee, do you want to go for a walk, do you want to ride in the car, are you hungry, are you thirsty, and especially do you want a treat (that I think is his favorite). He likes to cuddle alot. He has a great temperament with children and with other dogs. He hardly barks and then only when he isn't getting enough attention which seems to be quite often. His kennel is in our bedroom and last night for instance when Lynette and I went to bed, he was still in the kitchen laying down on the rug under the table. We turned off the lights and got into bed and he came by about 2-3 minutes later and went right into his kennel and we all went to sleep! The first couple of nights he would jump up on the bed as was his custom with his foster family. He is very dainty for a dog of his size for regardless of how hard he plays in the house, he hasn't knocked over anything yet. He and Lynette have discussions as to what belongs to him (and can be chewed) and what belongs to her and can't. I was especially pleased with his behavior yesterday. We went into Excelscior by Lake Minnetonka and walked all over the park and behind the grandstands is a small hill with a very narrow path. At the top of the path, I stopped to let Lynette go down first because the ground was steep and the footing not quite sure and while I waited, Foster looked at Lynette, stopped and sat down and waited for her to get to the bottom before moving and then when I started to go down he followed me slowly without pulling on his leash. He seems to understand what the situation is and how he should act. I didn't do anything different it was all him. We then stopped at Dunn Brothers and had chai tea lattes outside while he had his treats. He sat down at our table with no fuss. He is a beautiful animal and a great addition to our family.

Happy Hounds

Pet Haven has some great hound mixes in foster care right now. Hounds are generally known for being nose-driven and rather stubborn about it. They can also be rather vocal, with their signature hound bay-ing, but these three boys are wonderful hound ambassadors. They embody that which is great about hounds, without being too nose-driven or too loud. Any one of them would make a wonderful addition to a family who loves almost everything about hounds. Plus, how can you resist those ears?

Top to bottom:

Clyde (top) is a 4 year old Tree Walking Coonhound. He is convinced he is a lap dog.

Leroy (middle) is estimated to be 3 years old. He is convinced he is a sled dog (but so easy to walk with a gentle leader!).

Decey (bottom) is a 1 year old hound mix. He is convinced he is a small dog (as he has been spotted trying to nap in the cat's bed).

Adopted Dog Monday!

Ginger, a young terrier mix, was adopted this weekend! Ginger has a new mom and 2 new "kids" (13 and 17) to call her very own. They recently lost their family greyhound and came to our adoption event last week looking for a medium-sized family dog. However they were drawn to Ginger (one of our great "small" dogs!) and the rest, as they say, is history. Ginger's new family is very active and have a lot of experience training dogs -- which is just what Ginger needs. Congratulations, Ginger!

The photo is Ginger and her new mom (kids are cropped because they are minors and I didn't want to put them on the web without permission, but their smiles are just as big!).

Sadie safe and sound update

Sadie has been recouperating in her foster home and her foster mom sent us an update to share with everyone who helped look for her and worried about her:

Sadie was exhausted after her 8 days of being on the run in Minneapolis. All she wanted to do was sleep and eat for about two days. And then it was like a switch turned on and she was play, play, play! Getting all the other dogs to play and chase her around the yard. And pestering them inside until they will play. They really did miss her. She has put some weight back on and looks great. Back to her old tricks of hiding socks and dish towels. She likes to keep busy. She is so sweet and so dang cute. It's good to have her back. I am sending some photos of her and her best pal Rufus (a Pet Haven alum). This is how they spend their mid morning nap time.Sadie will be ready for adoption as soon as she has put on a couple more pounds.

Meet Chance... the cat

This week we're doing a little blog swap with the Pet Haven cat blog. They are featuring a cat-friendly dog and we are featuring a dog-friendly cat. Many families have both canine and feline members and we wanted to take this opportunity to highlight a couple of our foster kids who would love to join a blended household.

Attention all dog lovers! Yes, you heard right - dog lovers! Technically, I'm a cat, but I much prefer dogs. I like sleeping next to them, wrestling with them, and rubbing my face against them. I currently live with two large dogs and just adore them! I'm about 3 years old with handsome greenish yellow eyes.

I like to spend time looking out the windows to see what's happening outside. I make lots of low, guttural noises, so you can always hear where I am. I also really enjoy rolling around and chasing my white-tipped tail. I love to cuddle with my foster parents, too, and don't mind when my foster mom picks me up and dances around with me. I really just like to be around everyone, see what's going on, and get a little loving! I sure hope someone will give me a forever home soon - I'd love to have a doggie sibling or two to pal around with for the rest of my life!

If you think Chance might fit in at your home, please email cats@pethavenmn.org.

Is Missy your missing piece?

Our girl, Missy, is ready for a forever home.

Missy is our 2 year old, peppy black lab. She’s been with us for a few months, and has been in boarding since March. She had some separation anxiety in her first foster home, however we’ve been working with her and she’s doing much better!

Missy is very sweet and comfortable almost anywhere. She was at the Walk for Animals this weekend and was a super star! Missy walked extremely well with her gentle leader, and a number of people commented on how well-behaved she is. That’s pretty impressive for a such a happy lab!

Missy is crate and house trained, and LOVES kids. She’s very gentle and lets babies and kids pet her. She gets along well with other dogs and is cat-friendly, too.

Her last two boarding buddies – Riley and Colby – have each found forever homes, and now she’s all by herself at boarding. Won’t you please help our girl find an adoptive home?

If you are interested in fostering Missy, please email us at pethavendogs@yahoo.com.

Adopted Dog Monday!

What a great week - we have a lot of adoptions to celebrate!

Porter, an Aussie mix, found his family at the adoption event this weekend. They are going on vacation next week so he will hang out with foster mom for one more week before heading to his forever home. Congratulations, Porter (and Ann on not adopting her first foster!)!

Komo, a lab mix, is being adopted by his foster mom. She has realized that he is already home and wants to make it official. Congratulations, Komo!

Foster, a lab mix, found his forever home at the adoption event this weekend after more than 6 months in foster care. No one understood why this boy was not snatched up months ago, but we could not be more thrilled for him. Congratulations, Foster!

Lily, a senior poodle, has been in respite foster care for many months. She was too old and unhealthy to be put up for adoption. Lily's foster mom loves her and wants to make it official. Congratulations, Lily!

Max, a young Shih Tzu, was adopted this weekend. Congratulations, Max!

Cinja, an adult Shih Tzu, was adopted this week. Congratulations, Cinja!

Andy, a shepherd mix, was adopted this weekend. He is another black dog who has been in foster care for way too long! His new family includes a canine sister who was rescued from a neglectful situation. Andy is already hard at work teaching her how to be a dog. What a win-win situation. Congratulations, Andy!
