Red Lake Rosie's Adopted Dog Monday

It has been a busy adoption week for four of our Red Lake Rosie's Rescue dogs. Eudee, Mya, Gracie, and Charlie all found their forever homes. Thanks to all the foster families that took such good care of these dogs until they found their new families. Without you we would not have been able to save them.

Charlie the springer/aussie mix then and now. He came in as a shy confused boy. But so loveable you could not resist that look on his face wanting you to pet him. He does have a bullet lodged in his knee that may cause him more discomfort as he ages. For now he is up for any romp with another dog willing to play with him.

Charlie is living with a family of artists, mom working from home. He has a beagle sister, Roxy, a Pet Haven alum and a bunny that is VERY interesting to him. He also has two human siblings who love taking Charlie for walks in the park.

Gracie and Mya were two little labbie sisters that came into Red Lake Rosie's together. Pet Haven had a foster willing to take both of them so we brought them to the cities.

Mya found her family first. Her new mom is a piano teacher who works out of her home. Mya is learning how to be a good student too and wait quietly through the lessons. This may take a while to accomplish but Mya is a smart girl and her mom is very patient. Mya is already signed up for puppy classes at Canine Coach.

Gracie now lives on 1/2 acre of land and has lots of neighbors and relatives with other dogs to enjoy that huge space with. Her parents both work part time so they have time to spend with her. They already shopped at Chuck and Don's and bought good food and many new toys and bones. Both of these girls are living the rez dog's dream.

Eudee came to Pet Haven in rough shape. He suffered from Lyme disease, heartworm, and intestinal parasites. After a short vet stay and lots of medication to get him on the mend, Eudee came to his foster home to begin a 6-week recovery process from his heartworm treatment that involved a lot of sleeping and time in the kennel. Even as sick as he was, Eudee had a huge personality and loved nothing more than getting attention from his foster parents. He was a real trooper, and got through those 6 weeks like a champ. Once he got the all clear to be himself, his personality really came though.

Enter mom, dad and their four-year old twins. They have the perfect environment for Eudee…a large farm with plenty of room to chase squirrels and what Lisa described as “scent heaven” for Eudee! The kids took an immediate liking to him, and got him to sit several times for a treat. It was a perfect match!

Congratulations to all these dogs and their new families. And Happy Birthday to Karen Good from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue who was the first person to start them on their new journeys.

Trick or Treat

Tips to Keep Your Pet Safe This Halloween

As Halloween approaches, considering the safety of your beloved pets is very important. While humans may take kindly to being spooked, your cat or dog may find the experience tremendously frightening.

1. Keep all candy, particularly chocolate, out of reach.

2. Cellophane and wrappers can block intestinal tracts so secure all rubbish. Also watch for leftover Halloween litter while walking your pooch the next day.

3. Be smart with decorations. Wagging tails can easily knock over lit candles and jack-o-lanterns.

4. Only dress your dog in a costume if he can tolerate it. Don't cover her eyes or airways.

5. Keep Fido away from the front door, especially if he is not properly socialized with children or is known to escape. Use a baby gate or kennel if your pup is crate-trained. Keep ID tags on him at all times in the event he does escape between all the door openings.

6. Occupy your dog and avoid anxiety with a special chew or favorite toy.

7. Don't leave your pup outside. Pranks, taunting and theft are common this time of year.

8. It’s never a good idea to take your pet trick-or-treating. Dogs may become excited and uncontrollable, and if frightened may bite. For their protection, cats should be kept indoors at all times.

Adopted Dog Monday: Lou!

Lou, a darling 6-year old American Eskimo Mix, was a recent owner surrender and former Pet Haven alum who was adopted out as a young pup in 2004.

After six years, Lou's family decided that they did not have the resources or lifestyle to further care for her (yes, Lou is a girl!). So, our wonderful Pet Haven foster Ann, took Lou in and cared for her for just a few short weeks until Lou's new forever family came along...

Erin is an active woman who just loves everything about dogs and couldn't wait to bring Lou into her life. Miss Lou gets to live with Erin and her two roommates, where I'm sure she's going to be loved and adored like every dog deserves.
Here is a quick update from Erin:
"Everything is going great! I've already swept twice and vacuumed once since Thursday but that's ok with me:) And my roommates LOVE her! "
We wish Lou and Erin a lifetime of happiness, long walks and an abundance of treats!

Adopted Dog Monday

Jake the spaniel mix is finally home. He came into our program from a hoarder situation two years ago. A Pet Haven volunteer picked him up as a timid 6 month old puppy in the Animal Ark parking lot in Hastings. Jake was adopted twice since then into homes that just were not a good fit for him.

What was missing in his previous homes was another dog to teach Jake the ropes. Well look at his new sister, Carmen. They look like they could be related. Carmen is teaching Jake how to be a more confident dog. He is still up to some of his old Houdini tricks being able to get out of his kennel without leaving a trace of how he did it. But he is bonding with his new dad something he was not able to do in the previous two homes.

What a beautiful family. They are active and include Jake when they can. Mom works from home so Jake has lots of company. And where does the family live.......Hastings where Jake came into our program the first time. Oh Jakie it is a homecoming for you. Third time is as charming as you are. We wish you the best sweet boy!!

Super Adoption Event Recap

On September 18th, 29 local animal rescues and organizations set up tents at the Como Zoo for the first-ever full day "Meet Your Best Friend" Super Adoption Event. Pet Haven was more than excited to join our animal welfare friends and MN PAW partners for the opportunity to show off our dogs and cats and educate the public on animal rescue.

The morning started off cool and cloudy, with a little bit of rain. Pet Haven volunteers were troopers (as usual) and fought through the inclement weather to get our tents set up and animals ready for public showing. By noon, the clouds had parted and the sun was shining brightly. Throughout the day, we had 12 Pet Haven cats and 10 dogs put on their best "Adopt Me!" faces and they didn't disappoint! We had a steady stream of visitors and potential adopters to our booths. Some were interested in adding to their family, others were there just to simply love on our furry friends.

Thanks to all of our Pet Haven volunteers and fosters who made it out that day...and a very special thank you to our guest volunteers, Girl Scouts from Troop 50095 in Apple Valley who were working hard to hand out Pet Haven brochures.

Hope to see you at our next regularly scheduled adoption events on 10/16!
