Charlie - a bundle of fun

Charlie is a yorki - with long legs! He weighs 11# and is a loving and good natured fellow. His foster family has a fenced yard and Charlie loves that too - summer or winter - spring or fall -

Outside?

Can I go outside?

Do I have to put my coat on?

Hurry!

Charlie (the blur) and Russ playing in the snow.

Charlie's former family was busy and he lived in a town house. Hours spent in the kennel were long and he had to go outside to relieve himself on a leash and there was little time to play outside. Sometimes he wasn't completely done and he would go again on the rug inside. Their lives became busier and Charlie really wanted more attention and more time to play and more time for outside play.

In his foster home one person is retired and the other not working at the moment. Charlie gets to go outside to relieve himself and play when he wants to and on a three hour schedule.

No accidents in the house. He is used to a kennel and does not soil it but what he really loves is to have time outside to run and chase and explore and love his people.

Charlie enjoys other dogs - small? large? anything in between too.

He's very people friendly too and good with children.

What else would Charlie tell you about himself?

He'd like to be treated like a 'big' dog so he has time with you to be the playful boy he really is.

Some small dogs like to be babied and kept warm and cozy - Charlie says he likes to snuggle but he really likes to be like one of the big dogs too.

What else does Charlie want in a home?

Someone who will love him!

Someone who will play with him and get him outside to play and explore!

Lap time too!

Someone who has time for him, to go for walks around the lake!

Someone who can help him run off energy outside and keep extending the periods of time in between play sessions so he will finish his 'job' when he goes outside.

Rescued - Luna and Hunter

Luna was adopted from Pet Haven in 1997.

She and her buddy, Hunter, have been living the life of pampered pooches for many years! Hunter was adopted from K9 rescue.

Luna is 16 and Hunter is 15 - two fantastic, older dogs who make a home lighter and livelier because of their personalities and loyalty.

Who would have imagined that these rescues, who started life in very difficult circumstances, would live to find a forever home and share so much companionship!

"Thank you very much for taking the time for Luna when no one else would. She has taught us so much and showed us so much love and happiness even having her for 15 years, is not enough time when you have a dog like Luna."

Thanks again,
Teresa

Happy St Patrick's Day!

Tug O'Shanter here wishing you all a happy and safe St Patrick's Day. I had a great home visit yesterday. Maybe the luck of the Irish will be on my side and I will soon be in my forever home. Where is that blarney stone when you need it. Have a good one today. Love Tug

Bella is sporting the green today to celebrate St Patty's and to humor her foster parents. She would love to join you for some corned beef later tonight and every night. Check out her bio for more information.

Adopted Dog Monday: Gabby!!

Well Queen Gabby has finally found her forever family....and one can only surmise that she is going to be outrageously pampered like the royalty she is. Here she is above in her brand new bed cuddling with her new blanket.
Gabby has found a wonderful family - she's living with Grandma but it sounds like the entire family has welcomed Gabby into their lives...I don't think Gabby will want for anything in her life from now on!
We are so happy for Gabby and the family that was lucky enough to find her - we wish you a lifetime of happiness and cuddles!

Do you have room for Creek?

Creek sure is one handsome gentleman! Of course, we have no idea what breeds he may be made of up of – guesses have ranged from dalmatian, to hound, to boxer, to pointer. He may just be a true Heinz 57! Creek came to us from Rosie’s Red Lake Rescue where he was brought in by a Good Samaritan who found him injured and hungry.

Creek’s injury is now completely healed and he is a very happy dog! His tail is constantly wagging and he is so goofy that he makes us laugh every day. One of Creek’s most endearing quirks is his habit of “talking” when he wants to play or go outside. He is generally a quiet dog, but when he wants something, he lets you know! Given that Creek is still a bit of a puppy (he is about 1 ½ years old), he wants to play a lot! He loves toys that make him work for his food and any toy that he can take in his mouth and swing around. He also likes regular walks around the neighborhood, although he prefers you keep them short in the winter – he doesn’t like the snow!

Creek is a very smart dog and quick learner. When he came to live with us, he didn’t even know “sit.” He can now sit and stay and has been doing great with boundary training – he will even stay out of the kitchen while you are preparing food. Although his hilarious deep sigh of resignation will you know that he is not happy about it! Creek also just graduated with flying colors from an obedience class at the Canine Coach that helped him become better socialized with other dogs.

At home, Creek is a perfect gentleman and will make a wonderful addition to someone’s family! He is completely crate trained and house broken and is used to being left at home during the work day. Creek would prefer to be an only dog – although he made a lot of progress in his dog socialization class, he would be happiest on his own. Consider making Creek a part of your family – we promise he will keep you laughing! For more info on adopting Creek click here for his bio.

Sheeba ... the welcoming committee
at the adoption event on Saturday!
One of the great things about volunteering with Pet Haven is that there are a variety of volunteer opportunities and we do our best to match interests and passions of our volunteers with the needs of Pet Haven in helping us fulfill our mission of rescuing and re-homing dogs and cats and reducing pet overpopulation through spay/neuter initiatives, advocacy and outreach.

I am one of several 'bloggers' for the Pet Haven cat and dog blogs. I have been blessed to be a part of this incredible organization for over 4 years and have taken on a variety of roles and responsibilities over the years. Recently I have discovered a passion for photography ... so I thought ... how about combining my passion and desire to learn more about photography with my passion for helping animals??!! And that's what I have done, and in many ways feel like it's the best volunteer job one could have ... yes, then again, i'm a little biased :) I get kisses and purrs from these beautiful beings while trying to capture their spirit and their essence. And then I throw the photos into a video and put some music behind it to hopefully highlight these very special beings who desperately need for us Humans to be a voice for them and to give them that little boost in helping them find that very special person(s) who can provide them with their own home ... a forever home they hope, and a home with someone who will love them as unconditionally as they will love you.

I hope you'll join us in being a voice for these homeless dogs and cats. For now, they are being loved and cared for by their foster families but their wish is to have a family and a home of their own. Please share the video below with your family and friends.

Also, if you would like to learn more about volunteering email us at volunteer@pethavenMN.org. We will be having a new volunteer orientation on Saturday, 3/12.

In the 4+ years I have been volunteering with Pet Haven, I have received so much more from these incredible creatures who have taught me so much about life/living, compassion, community and the importance of giving back to causes we believe in and being a voice for the voiceless. There are many ways you can support Pet Haven or any other animal rescue: adopt, foster, donate, volunteer. I hope you consider one of them.

With gratitude,
Marilou Chanrasmi
Vice-President, Pet Haven Inc of Minnesota

Adopted Dog Monday

Joe now Jo-Jo was adopted by his foster mom. Here is what she has to say about this gorgeous boy:

"Jo-Jo is quite the character. When I began fostering him, he literally was by my side at every moment-no matter what. I have now had him a little over 4 months and he is still as faithful today as when I first received him. Jo-Jo loves going to the dog park, going on long hikes in the woods or a simple walk in the neighborhood. His favorite hobby is fitting as many tennis balls in his mouth as he possibly can-he is up to 3. He makes friends wherever he goes and everybody loves him to pieces. He is and always will be a lap dog, but I don't mind it a bit :)

Jo-Jo also has a big sister named Chanc. They hit it off right away! They love getting in trouble by persuading one another to do something they know they aren't supposed to do, but they are also such a pair and love each other A LOT!!!
The second day I had Jo-Jo I had a feeling I would adopt him and now Jo-Jo is an excellent addition to the family, it's like he was always meant to be here.

Jo-Jo will begin training this summer to become a registered therapy dog, just like his sister. I'm excited to see how this little guy changes peoples lives through is big brown eyes and his love for all. Lastly, since Jo-Jo's age wasn't known he was given his 2 year old birthday party on February 4th." Happy Birthday lucky boy!

Molly - in memory

Molly died on May 23, 2010. She was a typical rambunctious, mischievous (in fact that was her nickname for awhile!) young gal. Pet Haven foster homes were struggling to provide care for her as none had had her breed experience and energy level before.

Her family reports the following:

It is with deep sadness that we must let our Pet Haven friends know of the passing of our darling Molly.

She showed up on what was supposed to be a short term foster care assignment; one look at her and I knew she would stay in our home and our hearts forever. She had a rough start in life and her nickname of "Mischievous" was well deserved. Nevertheless, she soon assumed her place with the other two Dalmatians we had at the time; we still cannot believe that our bed was large enough to hold 2 people and 3 dogs - we have pictures to prove it!

As is so common with dalmations, Molly eventually succumbed to kidney failure. We are so blessed to have had this beautiful girl with the perfect markings in our life for over 11 years.
We will miss her terribly. Thank you, Pet Haven for the chance to know and love this extraordinary dog.

Stever Bergesen and Sue Seeker

On a personal note - When I was going through thyroid cancer in 2007, if it had not been for Molly, my recovery would have been a lot harder - She made me want want to get out of bed. I will always be grateful to her.

When this blog writer had to euthanize our first dog, one of our vets said to me, "The hardest part of loving and having a pet is that you will have to part with it at sometime. The memories that you carry forever are one of the rewards of having a pet."
