Honey's Story

Honey at Plymouth Heights Pet Hospital
Safe in rescue with Pet Haven!

Reflections by Marilou, Board Member of Pet Haven Inc of Minnesota, President of MnPAW (Minnesota Partnership for Animal Welfare) and Co-Founder of Leech Lake Legacy (a collaborative effort to help dogs and cats at Leech Lake Reservation)

On Monday, 2/13 Honey was hit by a car and left to die. Through the efforts of so many and the collaboration of Leech Lake Legacy and Pet Haven, sweet Honey has been given a new beginning. Pet Haven, acted quickly, took her into their foster program, ensured she had the necessary medical care and on Thursday, 2/16 had surgery to repair her broken leg. Honey’s overall care will cost Pet Haven almost $5,000.  We believe she’s worth it, and we hope you will too. The following video was created to share Honey’s story  …  she is loved deeply and despite all she’s been through has the most incredible gentle spirit and even looks like she’s smiling J

If the full screen of the video isn't showing up on your monitor click here to open up the video in a separate screen.

I’ve debated on how best to share Honey’s story and decided to simply share links to my personal blog where I share from my heart, her story, the importance of all of us working together on behalf of these precious animals and how so many in the community stepped up to advocate for Honey, the close call and the struggles of those of us in the front line of animal rescue, and how an injured stray dog up at a Reservation 3 hours north of here touched the hearts of so many.

Please consider making a contribution to help us reach our goal of raising $5,000. Any amount you are able to donate is greatly appreciated. Click here to make a donation.  We would also like to thank and acknowledge a very generous donation from an anonymous donor in the Rochester, MN area. Many, many thanks!!!

To read more about Honey’s story:

Reflections on Tuesday, 2/14 when it’s unclear whether Honey can be saved.

Reflections Wednesday, 2/15 AFTER Pet Haven steps up to take Honey into their foster program!

We will continue to share updates on Honey as she recovers from her surgery. Consider following us on the Pet Haven facebook fan page for regular updates.

A special thanks to everyone who played a part in Honey’s rescue. This rescue definitely took a village!! Here are just a few who played a key role:

To Natasha (good Samaritan) who stopped to save Honey; to Rory (Leech Lake Reservation Animal Control Officer); to Jenny Fitzer (Leech Lake Legacy); Nancy O and Barb W for transporting Honey on such short notice to the cities; to Bemidji Animal Care Center; to Dr. Cameron and the staff at Plymouth Heights Pet Hospital; to Mary Ann (Pet Haven board member) for taking the lead and thinking creatively and quickly to ensure Honey came into Pet Haven’s foster program quickly and got the needed care; to the Pet Haven dog division leadership team for their flexibility and willingness to react and respond to an urgent situation; to Pet Haven board of directors for their willingness to take on the care of Honey and her medical expenses; to Dinie for your willingness to foster Honey through her healing and recovery; to Metropolitan Veterinary Referral Services; to everyone who helped spread the word about Honey’s story.

Spike

This handsome, chocolate fellow has had a family who loved him, has had circumstances we are not aware of impact this family and then Spike, so that he was left with very little food and water for a long time and was skin and bones when he was rescued. A half grown puppy was found dead, starved to death, in the kennel he was kept in when rescuers became aware of his plight.

Spike was taken to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue after rescue, and then made his journey to Pet Haven after filling up on lots of water and small amounts of food served frequently until he began to gain weight again. He is believed to be about 3 yrs of age.

He came to Pet Haven knowing the hand signal for sit. He is fully house-trained. He rides well in the car. He can be kenneled in the house when you are gone but is trustworthy to be left out of a kennel too. He loves other dogs and plays well with them or by himself. He weighs about 60 lbs.

Spike loves to be by your side. He is quiet in personality and his foster believes he would make a great therapy dog or one who could go read with school children. He is respectful.

What do we hope for for Spike?

A family to love him.

A family to make him a part of their lives.

A family who will continue his training so he might be one of the lucky dogs who gets to help rescue some other people - seniors who remember the love a former dog gave them, children and adults who need the love he can help them remember and calm them so they can concentrate, folks who will appreciate the tail wags and kisses a dog like Spike can provide!

Do you work from home? Spike would love that and would quietly wait with you until you could take a 'Spike break' for a few minutes.

Do you work where Spike could go to work with you? Spike would love that too!

Do you work part-time? Spike would help you run errands, keep up the yard and get some exercise.

Are you semi-retired? Just think of all the things you and Spike could do together!

Banjo - a happy 'tail'!

Here's an update on Banjo and I've attached a few of our favorite photos from the previous year:

Super Banjo is still going strong, although he's had no use for his cape this winter due to the mild weather. He's lightening fast without it - the squirrels in the backyard quickly scatter whenever he's around.

Although Banjo has the same energy level as when we first got him, his face is getting even whiter as he gets older (hard to imagine I know!). His favorite spot this winter is laying in front of the fireplace after Chris gets it roaring. If there's no fire, he curls up on the couch under the blanket. It's certainly exhausting being on guard duty all the time!

We took Banjo on some fun hikes this past year and found out how much he likes investigating holes. On the trips when we couldn't take him along, he stayed with the grandparents and their three dogs without issue. He's gotten continuously better with other dogs, but is still terrified of children.

Banjo continues to be a fun and energetic (and snuggly) member of the family.

A new home for Penny!

This cute girl was named Gracie when she was with Pet Haven and has had a name change to Penny!

A happy new year to you and your family. I wanted to drop you a line and send a few pictures to let you know how our little girl is doing. Penny is growing up but still has a lot of puppy in her. She LOVES to play, go for walks, tease us with her toys, crawl up on a pile of pillows, and cuddle. She has totally taken over our house and hearts. I'm pretty sure we have become her pets. My grand-kids love her and are always posting pictures of her on their Facebook accounts. Everyone that has spent time at our house smiles the minute they see her. She smiles back! She's pretty much staying at a weight of 72 pounds and the our vet and staff laugh at her when we take her in as she is trying to kiss everyone and get the heck out of their! She has also learned to be a good girl when we take her in to be groomed. Nail cutting is something she does not enjoy but she has the most loving disposition and her defense when she is uncomfortable is to give kisses. She also has a squirrel that lives in one of the trees in her back yard who she loves to chase. I think the squirrel gets the better of her as it jumps from tree to tree while scolding her with her following on the ground. It is hard to believe she has been with us over a year. The last picture of her laying on her back (abused dog) is one of the latest and you can see how much she has grown.

Thanks again to you and all those at Pet Haven that made Penny's happy life possible. She is one happy girl and we love her.

Thank heaven for little girls -

Petite, delightful, soulful eyes - do you suppose the song was really written for Gigi?

Thank heaven for little girls
for little girls get bigger every day!

Thank heaven for little girls
they grow up in the most delightful way!

Those little eyes so helpless and appealing
one day will flash and send you crashin' thru the ceilin'

Thank heaven for little girls
thank heaven for them all,
no matter where no matter who
for without them, what would little boys do?

Thank heaven... thank heaven...
Thank heaven for little girls!

Looking for a lap girl? Gigi could be the one -

Looking for a little girl who will tell you when other dogs are going by the house?

Looking for a cute little button curled up on the back of the couch to see the world go by?

She knows stay, wait, bow and down and is very food oriented so training her is a lot of fun and she is a quick learner!

Gigi loves to play and will fetch the thrown toy endlessly, she also plays well with the standard poodle who belongs to the foster -

Gigi was fostered by someone previously who worked 10.5 hour days - she couldn't wait to go outside that long and would piddle in her crate. That's a long day for anyone! She goes to the door to indicate she needs to go outside in this foster home and has never had an accident.

Who is cuter than little Gigi? Not too many!

Happy Tails -

We love to get these kinds of stories and pictures!

Dear Pet Haven,
We are so happy with our new family member, Zoey! She is the sweetest, cuddliest Labrador and wants nothing more than to be by our side. What a perfect dog!
My husband and I found Zoey online, and Pet Haven was quick to answer our questions and connect us with Zoey's foster mom. The next thing we knew, Zoey was at our front door for a home visit, trying to crawl up into our laps and giving us her sweet, droopy-eyed look. We knew Zoey would be a great fit and that we were ready to give her a forever home.
Now Zoey is a part of our lives, and we are loving every minute. We have a nice little routine - she wakes us up with a big kiss (better than any alarm clock!) and helps us with every chore around the house. She joins us for jogs around the park and comes on car rides with us to visit with friends and family. Zoey is right by our side everywhere we go!

Everyone in the family has gotten a chance to meet her and are so impressed with how gentle and friendly she is. Our nieces and nephews are crazy about her, too, especially because she is missing one ear! Zoey blends right in at family get-together's and loves all the attention.

Zoey is such a joy, and we are so happy to have her. Thank you for helping us find our perfect companion!
