Pepper the right spice for you

A dash of fun, a pinch of play and a cup full of love – that’s Pepper. At a year-and-a-half old, Pepper’s all about being a puppy and being with you. Part Border Collie, he’s an active boy who would make a wonderful jogging partner or Frisbee toss companion. Agility would be another sport Pepper would enjoy. Of course, hanging out on the couch watching TV would be good, too.

58-pound Pepper is very smart and already knows some basic commands – sit, stay, and lie down all being on the short list. Obedience classes are recommended to feed into Pepper’s intelligence and his need for a job. A fenced yard would be wise, as well, given Pepper’s energy level.

Pepper seems to like everyone. Adults, kids, other dogs. But he especially likes cats. To him they are, you guessed it, the cat’s meow. He seems comfortable in new situations, enjoys car rides with ears flapping in the breeze and whatever else you want to involve him in. Pepper’s there ready to go whenever you are.

So make your life more flavorful. Just add Pepper.

Pass the Pepper, please!

Claudia, a PH volunteer, wrote up a little something about her day with Pepper this weekend at the 5K run:

What can I say, Pepper is that one-of-a-kind happy-go-lucky dog, who always has a wagging tail. I like to describe him as the "curious, happy kid" -- just content to check out the world. People seem to gravitate towards him, too. Must be his sweet face, or that million dollar smile.

Pepper was my running partner for The Fast and the Furballs 5k-9 on Sun May 31st (our first ever—watch Pet Haven's website for upcoming events!). He was a loyal pace-car, running by my side and keeping my enthusiasm to jog the full 5k. When we met other dogs along the way, he was a gentleman, saying hi in true doggy style. Pepper, being about 2 yrs old, is still a "kid" -- he has a ton of energy and is ready to share it with anyone he can! He loves sitting in the car, breeze in flapping his ears... waiting patiently for the next adventure.

On the flip side, Pepper is quite the snuggler. He loves to roll over and lay on his back, really to get those belly rubs! He's ready to sit, stay, and gives his paw (sometimes just to give it, even when he isn't asked!).

Foster homes needed!

Availability of foster homes is one of the greatest limiting factors when it comes to determining how many dogs (and cats) we can rescue. The number of animals in need always far out strips the number of foster homes available. We are always looking for new foster homes.

Summer is a great time to try out fostering. We've past the major muddy paws spring season (finally and thank goodness!) and taking an evening walk is fun (instead of the freezing cold chore that it can be in the winter).

We have all kinds of dogs waiting for foster homes right now:

Pepper is a 1 - 2 year old male lab/collie mix who is currently boarded at one of our doggy daycare partners. He is good with dogs, cats and kids. He knows basic commands and appears to be housebroken.

Harold is a 6-8 year old lab mix. Harold has been hanging out at one of our veterinary partners and has made an appearance at one of our adoption events. He was a bit growly with other dogs, but this may well be just a stress reaction to new situations. We would love to get him into a foster home where he can have a few days to settle in and show his true colors. Harold is on the smaller side for a lab mix.

Enya is a middle aged sheltie mix. She does well with other dogs, but does not like cats. She is housetrained. She should be an easy keeper for almost any foster home. She was surrendered by a family because their 2 year old developed allergies. She is good with kids!

Jester is a 2 year old retriever mix. He has a longer coat than a lab - maybe a flat coat or golden retriever mix. He is very good with other dogs. Not known how he is with cats and kids, but he's a very friendly boy!

Koda (sorry, no photo, but he's cute!) is a 3 year old male lab/dalmatian mix who is currently fostered by one of our doggy daycare partners. He is a good boy who would love to be your summer walking partner. He has done well with the other dogs at his boarding facility.

These two girls are young Australian Cattle Dog littermates that are looking for a new home. They are very friendly with other dogs. They do not need to be fostered together.

We also have a few other dogs looking for foster homes that we don't get have pictures or much information for:

We are taking in two dogs from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue this weekend. We don't have any information on what type of dogs we are getting from them. We will take dogs who would benefit the most from getting into a foster home or who need additional medical attention. Dogs from Red Lake have special spirits and it is nearly impossible not to fall in love with them, regardless of their breed.

We also are looking at taking in a beagle and a shepherd mix if anyone out there has a special affinity for these breeds.

If any of these dogs sound like they might fit into your household and you are interested in potentially fostering them, please email pethavendogs@yahoo.com

Pepper and Zoey: Fosters needed!

Pepper (top) and Zoey (bottom) are two black lab mixes who are getting a 2nd chance at a happy ending with Pet Haven. They are currently at an animal control facility in Iowa where the adoption rates for black dogs are abysmally low. They will be transported to Minneapolis this weekend are looking for foster homes.

Pepper is a 1 year old, male lab/border collie mix. It's not often that we know how a dog will do with cats before arriving in foster care, but Pepper is one of the exceptions -- we know he is great with cats! He is also reportedly good with other dogs and kids. He knows his basic commands already and has started working on his housetraining. What a catch!

Zoey is a 5 year old, female lab mix. She's a bit shy at first, but once she gets to know you she is very affectionate. She is good with other dogs and kids. Her favorite past times include snuggling and riding in the car. She's old enough to be past the crazy puppy stages and young enough to be up for anything you want to do.

If you have room in your heart and your home to take one of these dogs in as a foster, please email pethavendogs@yahoo.com.
