Foster Home needed for Maggie

Maggie is one of our recent intakes.... another gorgeous big black dog with a shiny, velvet coat! She's not yet up on our website but will be soon. She is currently being fostered at one of our doggie daycare partners, Pampered Pooch Playground. Although they are without a doubt pampering her, we would like to move her into a foster home (this enables us to then bring in and save yet another dog!) Here's what one of the trainers at Pampered Pooch has to say about Maggie:

"Maggie is fabulous with the other dogs big and small, usually plays for a little while in the morning and rests for the rest of the day. She really enjoys lounging on a nice soft bed or the couch and just has a soft and relaxed way about her. She is a little uneasy about new situations or places (even new rooms in our building she hasn't explored, once she explores

she is fine), just has a lowered body posture, but is very willing to please and trusts that you are putting her in a safe situation and will come with you willingly.

She is food motivated, and seems to just want to please you. She knows how to sit and shake and has the "puppy eyes" when she looks up at you. She is very laid back and tolerant of all of the dogs and loves attention and laying on a comfy bed. We leave a blanket in her kennel at night and she doesn't destroy it so I don't think she is too stressed being left alone (no sep. anxiety from what we can tell). I think she would be an all around sweet and very easy dog to have around. She is definitely one that I would take home if I could, just very sweet and easy to become attached to."

A foster buddy went to Pampered Pooch and took Maggie for an outing .. here's what she had to say about Maggie: "I transported her and she was a perfect lady. Pulled, but not too hard, rode great in the car with her nose hanging out the window. Very sweet."

Foster needed for Paden

Paden is a sweet one year old black and tan girl who was surrendered to a shelter in rural Iowa. As is the case with many of our intakes ... your guess is as good as our's as far as the breed - besides, at Pet Haven we love the mutts! Our shelter partners in rural Iowa do not have access to adopters as we do in the Twin Cities so our intake coordinator works hard to help dogs who otherwise would spend days/weeks/months in a stressful shelter environment. Paden was an owner surrender. She is good with cats, other dogs and kids. Paden would like you to know: "My game of choice is tug of war. I am very smart. I am very loving and sweet and I am a very pretty girl."

Here is additional info we got on Paden from one of her advocates at the shelter:

"Paden was at our big Pets on Parade event yesterday. She was around hundreds of animals ... dogs, cats, chickens, birds, etc. She did great! A local trainer was handling her and said Paden is very smart and responsive. She taught Paden how to heel in one afternoon. She was so good with every person and animal she met yesterday!"

Paden will be arriving on transport this coming Saturday. She will be fostered at one of Pet Haven's doggie daycare partners until we are able to find her a foster home. We love all of our doggie daycare partners (Pampered Pooch Playground, Auntie Ruth, and Downtown Dogs Minneapolis) .... however in the best interest of the pups we want to move them out of doggie daycare into a loving foster home as soon as possible.

Foster home needed: Charlie

Sweet Charlie is still hanging out at one of our doggy daycare boarding partners. He is a 9 month old Cavalier/Cocker Spaniel puppy who really needs to be in a home learning how to be a good canine citizen. He has been bounced around a lot in his life and needs some stability and boundaries. He is a good boy who does well with other dogs and cats. He needs a foster home with no kids under 10 years old because he hasn't been taught proper behavior when it comes to issues like jumping up and chewing on people. Charlie is your typical puppy and he's just looking for someone to take a chance on him!

Foster Home Needed: Jonnie Cakes

Jonnie is a new arrival from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. Jonnie is a 2 year old shepherd mix who has clearly had a rough start in life. She came in covered with ticks and has a tear on her ear. She is sweet as pie though and rode well in the car for our transporter. Not much is known about her at this point, but she will be moving to one of our doggy daycare boarding partners today, where we will get more information about how she does with other dogs and what her personality is like. Foster Home Needed: Charlie

Charlie is a 10 month old Cavalier/Cocker Spaniel mix who is in need of a foster home. Charlie is your typical puppy - he barks, he chews inappropriate items, he cannot be trusted to stick around off-leash, etc. Charlie is very cute, but he needs a foster home and an adoptive home that will work with him on basic obedience aw well as set (and maintain) boundaries on behavior expectations so that Charlie can learn how to be a good canine citizen. Charlie's foster home and adoptive home should not have young children.

Foster Home Needed: Harold

Poor Harold is still waiting for a permanent foster home. He's got a little bit of the grouchy old man syndrome going on and needs to be in a house with other dogs who will not be in his face. He's very sweet with people and he is fine with dogs who like to just hang out together. He's also fine with cats. He LOVES to snuggle.

Here are a few notes from one of our fabulous volunteer who has been visiting Harold in boarding:

- We spent about 1.5 hours walking and I am amazed at how calm he is in situations like walking over 35W to get from Bryant Park to Penn Lake. He is such a good walker and has such a positive energy.
- On sidewalks, areas where dogs may approach us rapidly -without warning- I use his 6 foot lead. When we are in the parks/open areas, I use the retractable. He gets such a smile on his face when he can do a slow run around on the leash, go play in the weeds, etc..

- We worked on his sit/come/down. Come is getting better every time. Every time he runs to me he now knows to sit and then gets bit of treat. We also worked on "around" for when he wraps himself around a tree :) He get the hang of this after 1 time.

- I brought a tennis ball with and he played with it quite a bit. I kept it as a novelty, we played for a minute and then I put it back in my pocket and brought it out later. He loves it if you kick it around like a soccer ball and then he runs around with it and if you ask him to bring it back to you, he does.

Because Harold doesn't like other dogs getting rowdy, he's not a candidate for hanging out at one of our doggy daycare boarding facilities (afterall, romper room is not Harold's idea of a good time).

Foster Home Needed: Enya

Enya is an 8 year old Sheltie mix who is looking for a foster home. Enya is housetrained and can be trusted with free roam for a full work day. Whatever Enya is mixed with (Husky?) she is a shedder! So her foster home will need to be prepared for finding little Enya hairs all over the house and commit to regular brushing. Enya was surrendered to Pet Haven by a family whose kids developed allergies to her.

Enya likes to try and herd cats and bark at them, so a home without cats (or at least cats who are content standing in for sheep?) is required. She generally gets along with other dogs, but didn't get along well with 2 Shih Tzus in a previous foster home (they do kind of look like little fluffy sheep, don't you think?).

Foster Home Needed: Lilah

Lilah is a 1.5 year old purebred Beagle. However, her temp foster reports that she is the quietest Beagle she's ever met -- not a lot of hound baying from this girl!

Lilah is well socialized and is happy to go along on any and all adventures. She's attended a rock concert, a baseball game and a 16 year old's birthday party while in Pet Haven care. She does well with kids and other dogs.

The only thing Lilah is still working on sorting out is her housetraining. As long as she is kept on a regular schedule and is given ample time outside to take care of business she is great! Lilah's been bounced around a lot in the past few months and needs a family that will commit to a few weeks of a strict housetraining schedule to get her on track.

Foster homes needed!

Pet Haven really needs some help with locating foster homes for a few dogs in need. If you have room in your house and home for a dog in need, please email pethavendogs@yahoo.com. Pet Haven covers all veterinary costs and provides food, crates, treats, toys, bedding, a leash, collar and gentle leader for foster dogs. Fostering is free!

Clyde is a 4 year old Tree Walking Coonhound. He was adopted out and returned because the dogs in his adoptive home did not like him. He previously lived with other dogs in his foster home and got along well with them and is a total charmer at our adoption events. Clyde is a quiet guy for a Coonhound. He also has no idea he is not a lap dog and loves to cuddle.



Meko is a 1 year old male lab/pointer mix. He does well with other dogs and is a little shy at first, but warms up quickly. One of our volunteers has spent some time visiting with him and he is a good walking partner. He is also a favorite with the staff at the doggy daycare facility where he has been hanging his leash.

Jester is an 18 month old male long-haired black lab mix. He's got some energy and would love to accompany his new foster on daily walks or jogs. He is learning quickly how to walk nicely with a gentle leader or harness. He also loves to play fetch so burning off some energy in the backyard is also an option. He is a good boy. He is a leaner and loves attention. He can be a little bossy with other dogs so would do best with an experienced dog owner for a foster.

Winky (no photo available) is a 4 year old Japanese Chin mix. She is shy and needs a patient foster who will help build her confidence. Children make her nervous so she needs a kid-free foster home.

Harold is an older lab mix. He does well with cats and other dogs that respect his personal space. He would do well in a home with other laid back dogs and would not do well in a home with a rambunctious in-your-face canine. He has good house manners and loves to snuggle with his people. He is crate trained and housetrained.

Foster home needed: Meko

Meko is a young, male black lab mix (his hair is a bit longer than your typical lab) who came to us from a shelter in rural Iowa. He has had surgery to remove scar tissue on his elbows -- there are no lingering physical limitations, but he needs to have soft dog beds (or couches!) to lay on to protect his sensitive joints. He is currently hanging out at one of our doggy daycare partners which has padded floors and dog beds in the overnight suites, but he would love to hang his leash at foster home.

A few volunteers have been visiting him at doggy daycare and getting to know him. He's described as a little reserved, but not too shy to jump up on the counter and check things out. He went for a jog around Lake Calhoun last weekend and did very well after he got over the initial excitment. He did well greeting people of all ages, including kids. He gets along well with other dogs.

Foster home needed: Harold

Harold is an 8 year old black lab who has been in hanging out in boarding for several weeks waiting for a foster home or forever home. Harold is a smaller black lab who might be a little set in his ways. He is growly when introduced to other dogs. We would like to try him in a foster home with no other dogs or laid back, mellow dog who will give him the space that he seems to indicate that he would like. The shelter that had him before Pet Haven did indicate that he was good with the shelter cat. Harold is very sweet with people and knows some basic commands. Being black, older and a little grouchy he is a gent who really needs someone take a little chance on him.

Kaia and Ari - Foster or adoptive homes needed!

Kaia and Ari are 9 month old female littermates. They are cattle dog mixes and should be around 40 lbs when they are full grown. They are being surrendered through no fault of their own and their previous owner has been able to provide us with a lot of information about the girls. The girls are good with kids, dogs and cats and have lived with birds as well. Their previous owner has helped us out by writing up some bios for the girls:

Kaia
Sweet and a great snuggle buddy. Her big brown eyes greet you with hertail going a mile a minute. She loves to be held and go for walks but she doesnt like when cars drive by her. She is very attentive and comes when called. She loved her kitten friend and would lick the kitten clean. She loves her belly rubbed and goes crazy for aspponful of peanut butter. At the dog park she'd rather have the other dogs chase her then to roll around in the dirt with them. She loves laying right next to you during naps and to lay in the sun.

Ari
The Adventure seeker, always curious and checking out the area for things she wouldnt approve of... she hasnt found anything yet but youc an tell she is looking to protect. Ari Loves water, bath time is a piece of cake... fill up the tub and put some towels on the floor and she takes care of the rest. She loves to stick her nose under water and blow bubbles. When she walks she has a natural sense of confidence and has her head up high and walks with pride. She is very up front and likes to make sure people know when she is around. Ari is also a roughhouser and likes to wrestle dogs at the dog park but she usually ends up on her back also. She loved playing with the big saint bernard, and is very gentle with little dogs & small animals.

Foster homes needed!

Availability of foster homes is one of the greatest limiting factors when it comes to determining how many dogs (and cats) we can rescue. The number of animals in need always far out strips the number of foster homes available. We are always looking for new foster homes.

Summer is a great time to try out fostering. We've past the major muddy paws spring season (finally and thank goodness!) and taking an evening walk is fun (instead of the freezing cold chore that it can be in the winter).

We have all kinds of dogs waiting for foster homes right now:

Pepper is a 1 - 2 year old male lab/collie mix who is currently boarded at one of our doggy daycare partners. He is good with dogs, cats and kids. He knows basic commands and appears to be housebroken.





Harold is a 6-8 year old lab mix. Harold has been hanging out at one of our veterinary partners and has made an appearance at one of our adoption events. He was a bit growly with other dogs, but this may well be just a stress reaction to new situations. We would love to get him into a foster home where he can have a few days to settle in and show his true colors. Harold is on the smaller side for a lab mix.


Enya is a middle aged sheltie mix. She does well with other dogs, but does not like cats. She is housetrained. She should be an easy keeper for almost any foster home. She was surrendered by a family because their 2 year old developed allergies. She is good with kids!




Jester is a 2 year old retriever mix. He has a longer coat than a lab - maybe a flat coat or golden retriever mix. He is very good with other dogs. Not known how he is with cats and kids, but he's a very friendly boy!





Koda (sorry, no photo, but he's cute!) is a 3 year old male lab/dalmatian mix who is currently fostered by one of our doggy daycare partners. He is a good boy who would love to be your summer walking partner. He has done well with the other dogs at his boarding facility.


These two girls are young Australian Cattle Dog littermates that are looking for a new home. They are very friendly with other dogs. They do not need to be fostered together.





We also have a few other dogs looking for foster homes that we don't get have pictures or much information for:

We are taking in two dogs from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue this weekend. We don't have any information on what type of dogs we are getting from them. We will take dogs who would benefit the most from getting into a foster home or who need additional medical attention. Dogs from Red Lake have special spirits and it is nearly impossible not to fall in love with them, regardless of their breed.

We also are looking at taking in a beagle and a shepherd mix if anyone out there has a special affinity for these breeds.

Abbie and Jester

Abbie and Jester came in to Pet Haven this weekend from a small shelter in rural Iowa.

Abbie was surrendered to the shelter because she would not hunt. She's 15 months old and a small lab mix at about 40lbs. She is smart and sweet, the shelter volunteers just loved her. She kept her kennel clean at the shelter so they think she is probably housetrained. She's shy at first, but loves attention once she warms up to you. She is good with other dogs. Abby has gone to a foster home.


Jester is a sweet retriever mix. He has longer black hair. He's estimated to be 2 years old and weighs in at 58 lbs. He's working hard on housetraining and doing very well. The shelter reports that he loves attention and he loves other dogs. He was checked by our vet this weekend and was given a good bill of health other than a little ear infection. He's hanging out at one of our doggy daycare partners while he waits for a foster home. He's a young boy who is still impressionable and I am sure he will flourish in a loving foster home. Maybe that home is yours?
