Adopted Dog Monday!

This week we have quite a lot to celebrate with 5 dogs finding their forever homes! What's extra special is that some of these dogs have been in Pet Haven's foster program for quite some time.

Max's new parents are crazily similar to his previous foster parents. His previous foster mom has already made two followup phone calls and on both occasion has learned he was doing well ..." He's already been hissed at by his new kitten sibling and was unphased." His new dad said "this is exactly the type of dog we were looking for". Congrats Max and thanks for hanging in with us and waiting till just the right adopter came along for you.

Katie, our Pointer mix, has found her forever home at a senior living center. Katie had been in Pet Haven's foster program for quite some time (approximately 14 months!). Katie suffers from separation anxiety and was originally rescued from a hoarding situation. Pet Haven and Katie's foster will continue to work with Katie's new community home as she makes the transition. For a pup who does not like to be left alone, this is a perfect home for her, as she will always have someone with her! Reports on Katie thus far have also been great! Congrats Katie!

Last week Sonoma (black lab/husky mix) got lucky and was adopted by a wonderful dad. Well ... this past week, Sonoma's new add decided to add a second companion to his home. So now Sonoma has a new brother and Leroy, after being in Pet Haven's foster program since April, 2009 is now finally home. We have no doubt that both Sonoma and Leroy will be spoiled. We also hear that Sonoma's new dad is continuing the tradition of providing her with strawberries at bed time. I wonder if Leroy will learn to love the strawberry bed time snack :) Congrats Leroy and Sonoma!

Pet Haven's screener shared the following after Maggie's home visit:

"When I did her visit today- she was resting on "her" couch in the sun room, curtains back so if we were to get sunshine she wanted it to shine on her, This is what I was told by her new mom and day, She barked for the first time at the door bell. Maggie is eating good, and has a boy friend across the street - He came a courting last night for a walk, do these parents sound perfect?? Maggie and the cat are good with each other and slept all curled up later in the evening with mom and dad watching a movie last night, As I was leaving Maggie was really enjoying her self and I know I heard her say GO TWINS!!!!

Enya's new mom is a full time student (most classes on line) also works from home, and lives on 1st floor has a court yard fenced in with other dogs to play with, she can run in and out all day if she likes, Nina met Enya when her Aunt Leslie was fostering her, we have been working for over a month on this adoption, Nina greeted Enya with a big smile - Greeted her foster mom Lena with
a big hug both had tears it was a great feeling.

Foster Home needed for Maggie

Maggie is one of our recent intakes.... another gorgeous big black dog with a shiny, velvet coat! She's not yet up on our website but will be soon. She is currently being fostered at one of our doggie daycare partners, Pampered Pooch Playground. Although they are without a doubt pampering her, we would like to move her into a foster home (this enables us to then bring in and save yet another dog!) If you would like to learn more about fostering with Pet Haven be sure to email volunteer@pethavenmn.org and sign up for our new volunteer orientation this coming Saturday. Here's what one of the trainers at Pampered Pooch has to say about Maggie:

"Maggie is fabulous with the other dogs big and small, usually plays for a little while in the morning and rests for the rest of the day. She really enjoys lounging on a nice soft bed or the couch and just has a soft and relaxed way about her. She is a little uneasy about new situations or places (even new rooms in our building she hasn't explored, once she explores
she is fine), just has a lowered body posture, but is very willing to please and trusts that you are putting her in a safe situation and will come with you willingly.

She is food motivated, and seems to just want to please you. She knows how to sit and shake and has the "puppy eyes" when she looks up at you. She is very laid back and tolerant of all of the dogs and loves attention and laying on a comfy bed. We leave a blanket in her kennel at night and she doesn't destroy it so I don't think she is too stressed being left alone (no sep. anxiety from what we can tell). I think she would be an all around sweet and very easy dog to have around. She is definitely one that I would take home if I could, just very sweet and easy to become attached to."

A foster buddy went to Pampered Pooch and took Maggie for an outing .. here's what she had to say about Maggie: "I transported her and she was a perfect lady. Pulled, but not too hard, rode great in the car with her nose hanging out the window. Very sweet."

If you are interested in learning more about Maggie and potentially fostering her email volunteer@pethavenmn.org or dogs@pethavenmn.org.

Adopted Dog Monday!

We have some wonderful adoptions to celebrate this week!

Maggie, an older black lab, went to her new home this week. Her new home has a mom and daughter, three cats and a big fenced yard. Maggie will be in heaven! Congratulations, Maggie!

Daisy, a black lab, has been in foster care for many months waiting for the right home to find her. She has some trust issues and need an adoptive home where she could feel safe and who would move slowly with her when necessary. Daisy met her new dad at the dog park and worked her charms. His last dog was also picky with her friends, so he is familiar with the challenges he may face with Daisy. Congratulations, Daisy!

Adopted Dog Monday!

Riley, our spaniel mix with significant separation anxiety, has found his new home! Riley's new mom met him when she attended a seminar co-costed by Pet Haven a couple of weeks ago. Riley will be helping his new mom at her job on a daily basis. His new mom is a community risk reduction officer with a local city and Riley will work along side her as a therapy dog for at-risk youth and individuals being released from prison. It's an ideal arrangement for Riley. His foster mom has offered to provider doggy daycare on the rare occassion the Riley can't go to work with his new mom. Riley's new mom is also adding 2' to the height of her fence to keep him safely contained and he has a new preschool-aged boy to watch over and hang out with.

Some dogs are easy placements and could settle in well with almost any home. Some dogs, like Riley, need a very special home with a very special owner who can meet their unique needs and love them because of or in spite of their faults. Congratulations, Riley, on finding your very special home!

Sophie is in a foster-with-intent home near the creek where she has a new mom, dad and 10 year old girl to hang out with.

Maggie, a senior black lab, has a new home at a farm in Wisconsin. What a lucky girl!

Sadie is still on the run, please keep an eye out for her if you are in the Longfellow area of Minneapolis.

Fun Facts About Foster Dogs

I thought a Friday near the end of the month would be a good time for an update on some of the dogs for whom we have put out foster pleas, either by email or on our foster dog blog. Most of them have found foster homes. To everyone who responded to our requests for help, a sincere thank you -- whether you were able to take a dog or not!

ALFIE is in a foster home with intent (to adopt) waiting for her second heartworm treatment next month. Her foster family loves her gentle spirit and is enjoying their time with her.

OSO is also in a foster home with intent. This lovable boy is living with another Rottie mix and both dogs are enjoying having canine companionship, something new for both dogs.

MISSY has a great foster buddy who has taken her home for the weekend. There are already three dogs and a cat in the home, including adoptable Pet Haven dog Andy, so Missy will be spending her weekdays at Pampered Pooch Playground.

RILEY, our nervous but oh-so-dear Springer mix is in his original foster home with Pet Haven. We are looking for a situation for him where people are around 24/7, such as a group home. Please put the word out for this boy. There is a right place for Riley -- we just need to find it for him.

SOPHIE, the Yellow Lab/Hound mix is going to a foster home this evening. Her new foster mom is new to Pet Haven and has no other animals, which may be the best place for Sophie as she is a little particular about which dogs she likes to hang around with!

MAGGiE, a senior Black Lab, has a home visit scheduled for this weekend. She came and went so quickly she didn't make it to our website, thus proving that being an older big, black dog doesn't necessarily mean that you are unwanted!

FLETCHER, now known as GEORGE was fostered with intent for a short while before his family decided to make it official. This cute chocolate lab is having a blast in his new forever home!

TUCKER, a Lab/Chow Chow is in a foster home with intent. Tucker's family is working on a couple of behavior issues with him, but are hoping to adopt him soon.

PORTER, formerly BUDDY is in a terrific foster home -- mine! ;) He's already generated some interest from an Aussie-owned family; meanwhile, he and my socially-challenged GSD Daisy have gotten past the awkward "let's just ignore each other" stage and were spotted playing together this morning.

SAVANNAH is still at Auntie Ruth's waiting for a foster home to open up for her. If you would like a sweet dark chocolate companion, let us know. You will not be sorry for welcoming this morsel into your home.

I think that's about it for today. Please keep spreading the word about our dogs. Your efforts make a difference. Many of our dogs have been placed in foster and adoptive homes through your contacts.

Adopted Dog Monday!

We have a very exciting adopted dog Monday!

Maggie has been in foster care for 14 months and we have often wondered why no one has fallen for this girl in all that time. All that changed this weekend when she headed to a new foster with intent home! This is the type of home that her foster has dreamed of for Maggie -- a farm setting where she can run, explore and engage all her herding and hound instincts. She also has 2 kids to call her own and a new dad who has had both shelties and hounds and knows what to expect with Miss Maggie.
